News > Rooftop Celebrate Capital of Culture at the Cathedral

On 31st December 20007, Rooftop supplied sound production and crew for the Liverpool Capital of Culture New Year's eve event at the Anglican Cathedral. The evening started with a performance by Love & Joy Gospel choir to three thousand people inside the cathedral whilst preparations were made outside on the Rankin Porch for the twelve O'clock celebrations which included further performances by the choir as well as a fireworks display.

In order to combat the notoriously difficult acoustics, Rooftop chose to install a distributed system comprising two d&b C7 tops and four d&b C7 subs as the main FOH system with four sets of delays comprising a total of four Nexo PS10s and four Nexo PS15s.

With space at a premium in the packed out venue, FOH engineer Chris Taylor chose to operate monitors and FOH from a Yamaha LS9 making full use of the onboard processing and the LS9-editor to assist with the delays and system EQ.

"Working in the Cathedral always requires a certain level of sensitivity to the architecture of the building as well as the fact that the building is first and foremost a place of worship. We had to take that into account when designing the system so as to minimise the visual impact of loudspeakers, consoles and cable runs. With such a small surface area and the ability to control it remotely, the LS9 was the obvious choice."

On stage, a combination of Shure in-ear monitoring systems and d&b wedges provided monitoring for the band and choir respectively.

Meanwhile, video technician Aaron Brown was hard at work mixing the cameras, words and DVDs that were projected behind the choir.

Outside, the main system comprised additional d&b C7 boxes whilst Nexo PS15s were arranged to provide front fill. Once again, d&b Mon15s provided monitoring for the choir and speakers whilst control was provided by an Allen & Heath Mixwizard with Shure RF.
